RESULTS day got off to a good start for Wicklow Rose Megan Swart when she received news she was in line for a college place.

Megan was in Co Leitrim at the time on the Rose Tour, but her principal rang to tell her that she was in pole position to secure one of her top college choices.

“I was delighted, because even though I probably won’t get offered my first choice on the CAO, I should definitely get my third, a four-year degree in International Hospitality Management at DIT,” Megan told the Herald.

“It’s all a bit surreal really. There’s so much going on and the Leaving Cert results are happening in the middle of it.

“Then someone says, ‘You did your Leaving Cert, didn’t you?’ and it all comes back to me.

“Sometimes I have to remind myself, as I almost forget about it.”

Juggling Rose duties and school work is no bother to the 18-year-old, who is the youngest-ever contestant in the Rose of Tralee.

Three days before she sat her exams she competed at the Rose of Tralee regional finals in Port Laoise to win her place  in the competition.

On Monday, when the first round of CAO offers is out, she may have to face her live TV interview with Daithi O Se.

Megan will find out over the weekend if she will take to the stage on Monday or Tuesday, when this year’s winner is announced.

Even though she’s at the epicentre of the excitement, Megan is taking it all in her stride.

“I take each day as it comes and I think that’s what got me through so far.

“I’m excited about DIT and I hope I do get an offer of a place, which I should judging from last year’s points.

“If I don’t... well, everything happens for a reason,” she added.
