Medical card delays are a disgrace
The HSE can no longer ignore the frustration of people waiting on new medical cards. It is a topic that has been raised again and again by people who have been at the coalface of delays in issuing the cards.
In this paper, we have reported on the case of a young woman on kidney dialysis who had been waiting five months to get her card renewed.
This week, HSE representatives were quizzed by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in the Dail over extensive delays being experienced by people applying for medical cards, and at this stage everybody must accept that something must be done.
It has been acknowledged that the application procedure is complex. In the first instance, this entire process should be simplified.
Medical cards are a necessity, not a luxury, so the HSE should get its act together and see that they are issued to whoever needs them immediately.
