Match made in heaven as Rory and Caroline set for NY wedding

The world of pro tennis and golf will officially merge when Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki swap vows this August.

The two professional sportsstars, dubbed Wozilroy by the media, are due to officially seal the deal in New York at the end of this summer.

The Down golfer (25) is obviously keen to tee off the autumn as a married man as he walks down the aisle with his Danish stunner.

A source close to the couple, who have been dating nearly three years, revealed they had set the date for August.

“They’ve only been engaged a few months, but they’re both keen to make it official and are planning a spectacular day for guests,” she said.

“They’re keeping their invite list under wraps for now for security reasons because it includes some A-list superstars from around the world,” she said.

More than 200 celebrities from the world of sport, politics and entertainment are expected to be in attendance to see the two top players make things official.

Former US president Bill Clinton is even rumoured to be among those on the guestlist.

The couple recently revealed they had set a date but they wanted to try and keep it under wraps.

“We have set the date,” Caroline said.

When asked if it was this year, she said: “You never know. I am so excited - it’s such an exciting time.”

The pair have had to work out their nuptials date around their mutually hectic schedules.

The US Tennis Open takes place at the end of August and Caroline (23) is due to play but given that it’s being held in Flushing Meadows, New York, she won’t have too far to travel.

And the former world No 1 is obviously relishing the thought of becoming Mrs McIlroy, given her comments on starting a family with her fiance.

“I want to be a relatively young mother, and I do not see it as being too far in the future,” she said.

“Therefore, I have no dream to make my mark. Instead, I enjoy economic freedom my hard work has given me. It means I can give my children the best start in life by being there 100 per cent for them.”

Caroline currently stands at No 14 in the world rankings and has been keen to get back to her top form.

She and Rory got engaged during a trip to Australia with Caroline confirming the news a short time later by showing off her massive sparkler.

Sporting a huge diamond and sapphire ring worth an estimated €150,000 while in Sydney, she confirmed their engagement on Twitter.

Caroline tweeted: “Happy New Year everyone! Rory and I started 2014 with a bang! I said YES!!!!”

Last March, she announced that her father Piotr was going to assume her coaching duties again after she split from Maria Sharapova’s former mentor Thomas Hogstedt.

Although she has never won a Grand Slam tournament, Caroline has earned over €11.5m in her career to date.

And she acknowledges how lucky she is. “I’m in a situation where I do not have to think about money, everything I achieve from now on is just a plus.

“It’s about enjoying it, you only live once,” she said.

“When you start playing, everything is new and it’s easy to find the motivation. Now, it’s about finding the desire to play — and if you don’t have that, you may as well give up.”
