Marian's video of ex-king and mistress causes royal rumpus
A small Westmeath village has found itself at the centre of royal intrigue in Spain after ex-king Juan Carlos attended the opening of their new community centre.
The former monarch (79), who abdicated from the Spanish throne in 2014 in favour of his son, Felipe, was a surprise visitor to the village of Clonmellon last month and happily posed with locals for pictures.
He was the guest of Mexican millionaire Allen Krause, who bought the local church and revamped it for the community.
But the event made headlines after a video uploaded to YouTube showed Marta Gaya (68), long described as Juan Carlos' mistress, at the same event.
It is the first time they have been pictured together, despite two decades of rumours they are romantically linked.
The controversy has propelled Clonmellon mum-of-two Marian Tighe into the limelight as the person who recorded the video and uploaded it.
She was totally unaware of the significance of what she had filmed.
"Mr Krause told the people there was a special guest in attendance. Sure we had no idea who it was," said Marian.
"Towards the end of the event, he introduced the former king of Spain, to the surprise and delight of everyone. He was a gentleman and was happy to pose for photos.
"So I took some photographs and video.
"I put up the video on YouTube - it got a few hundred hits and I was delighted. I then re-edited the video and changed the headline saying King Juan Carlos was in it. Next thing, the views soared to 99,000.
"Sure, I didn't have a clue who she was at the time."
