Man whose body found near garage had been arrested by gardai the previous day
A MAN whose body was discovered near the carwash of a garage had been arrested by gardai the previous day.
The Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) is investigating the death of the man whose body was discovered by a member of the public at Kelliher's Garage in Rathass, Tralee, Co Kerry at around 6.50am, not far from Kerry General Hospital (KGH).
The man, who was in his 40s, had been arrested for public order offences near his home in Killarney on Thursday and brought to Killarney Garda Station.
Shortly after his arrival at the garda station, an ambulance was called and he was taken to KGH for treatment.
Because the man had been in contact with gardai in the hours before his death, the incident was referred to GSOC for independent investigation.
GSOC investigators have been deployed to the scene and will examine the circumstances of the death.
GSOC is appealing for anyone who may have encountered the man in the early hours of this morning, or anyone with information which may assist the investigation to contact them on 1890 600 800.
The Garda Ombudsman later confirmed it was investigating the incident.
"According to the Garda Siochana, the man had been arrested for public order offences yesterday evening near his home in Killarney and brought to Killarney Garda Station," it said.
"Gardai report that, shortly after arrival at the Garda Station, an ambulance was called and he was transferred to Tralee General Hospital.
!As a result of the person having been in contact with gardaí before his death, the incident was referred to the Garda Ombudsman for independent investigation."
GSOC investigators have been deployed to the scene and will examine the circumstances of the death and have appealed for information.
