Prison sought for crash pilots
Brazilian prosecutors are seeking imprisonment for two American pilots involved in the 2006 crash of an airliner that resulted in 154 deaths.
In 2011, a federal judge ruled that pilots Joseph Lepore, and Jan Paladino were negligent for not verifying that anti-collision equipment and a device that would have alerted controllers to their location were functioning in their jet. Both have both denied that accusation. Their four-year prison sentence was later converted into community service in the US.
Jazz great Herb dies aged 100
Herb Jeffries, the jazz singer and actor who performed with Duke Ellington and was known as the “Bronze Buckaroo” in a series of all-black 1930s Westerns, has died of heart failure. He was 100.
Jeffries became familiar to jazz fans, but segregation in the film industry limited his movie career.
He scored a big hit with Ellington as the vocalist on “Flamingo,” in 1940.
Among the other songs he did with Ellington were “There Shall Be No Night” and “You, You Darlin’.”
