Man knifed in throat during attack by mob

A YOUNG man was viciously stabbed in the throat and killed during a rave in an industrial estate unit in the early hours of yesterday morning.

James Griffin (26), from Croftwood Park, in Ballyfermot, died following the mob attack at the CG Private Members Club.

The club is located at a unit in the Park West Business Park, on O'Casey Avenue, in Ballyfermot.

It is understood that the victim was set upon by a group of men near the entrance to the club.

One of the assailants then pulled out a knife and stabbed Mr Griffin in the throat.

A source told the Herald that there was a large amount of blood in the area after the frenzied attack.

"Everyone who was in the club was told to stay inside until he was taken away in the ambulance," the source said.

"There was blood everywhere."

Investigating gardai believe that the attack is connected to a long-running dispute between Mr Griffin and another group.

It is thought he was involved in an argument earlier in the night.

There were hundreds of people in the club at the time of the attack. Gardai were called to the scene in Ballyfermot at approximately 4am.

Mr Griffin was taken by ambulance to Tallaght Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

One family member told the Herald yesterday that they "have no idea what happened" but did not wish to comment any further.

"It really brings into focus the need to work with the gardai, to redouble our efforts to ensure these crimes become a thing of the past, particularly in that community, which has seen too much violence in recent years," local councillor Daithi Doolan said.

Gardai are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to contact them at Ballyfermot garda station on 01 666 7200, the garda confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
