A man attacked in a fast-food restaurant in Tallaght was last night in an induced coma in hospital.
The victim of the weekend assault was named locally as Shane McCall, who lives in the nearby Old Bawn area.
It is understood Mr McCall, who is in his 40s, was in McDonald's near Belgard Road and The Square shopping centre when the incident took place at around 3am on Saturday.
Mr McCall was found injured in the car park when gardai arrived - but it is understood he went home following the attack.
Gardai say the victim suffered facial injuries but did not receive medical attention at the scene.
However, later on Saturday he felt unwell and went to nearby Tallaght Hospital. He was then transferred to Beaumont.
Gardai say his injuries are serious but not life-threatening.
"At approximately 3am, gardai attended the car park of a fast-food restaurant following reports of a man in his early 40s having received facial injuries as a result of an assault," said a garda spokesman.
He said the man attended hospital the following day and he remains in a serious condition.
A man in his 20s arrested by gardai was yesterday released without charge and a file will be sent to the DPP.
McDonald's said the safety and security of "our people and customers is our absolute priority".
"We do not tolerate any form of violence or abuse and will be cooperating fully with gardai and ask anyone with information to get in touch directly with them," the spokesperson added.
