A man has been accused of wielding a claw hammer and chasing after another man, who was then struck on the head from behind.

Ryan Cannon (25) was "clearly seen" with the hammer on CCTV footage, Dublin District Court heard.

The alleged victim was treated in hospital for his injuries.

Judge Michael Walsh granted bail and adjourned the case.

Mr Cannon, of Park View Apartments, Vauxhall Street, Balbriggan, is charged with producing an article capable of causing serious injury and likely to intimidate in the course of a dispute at Curran Park, Balbriggan, on June 17.

He is also separately charged with breaching Covid-19 regu-lations by failing to comply with garda directions under the Health Act at his home on April 22.

Objecting to bail, a garda told the court that officers went to the scene and saw a man who had a cut to his right ear.

He said he had been hit with a hammer from behind. He was taken to hospital by ambulance, treated and discharged.

Fleeing

It would be alleged that CCTV footage showed the accused chasing after the man, and he could be clearly seen holding a hammer.

The garda said the footage then showed the accused fleeing in the opposite direction seconds later.

Witnesses said they saw two men having a row, and one produced a hammer and struck the other.

In the earlier incident, the garda alleged Mr Cannon was having a house party with 15 people present.

Officers cautioned the acc-used, and it was alleged he refused to comply with instructions.

Defence solicitor Aonghus McCarthy said no admissions were made, no hammer had been recovered and there was no assault complaint or charge.

Judge Walsh said the acc- used was presumed innocent and granted bail under conditions.

He is to have no contact, directly or indirectly, with a named witness.

He must also stay out of a number of locations in Balbriggan and be of good behaviour.
