Man dies after fall from the fifth floor at Mater Hospital
A MAN has died after a fall from the fifth floor of the Mater Hospital in the early hours of this morning.
The 40-year-old, with an address in the Fairview area in the north of Dublin city, died after falling into a courtyard at the hospital at around 1am.
He was found on the ground by staff at the North Circular Road hospital with extensive head and leg injuries.
It is understood the man had a history of psychiatric illness and the death is being treated as a personal tragedy.
The man was known to gardai but not for serious crimes.
Gardai and the Mater Hospital are carrying out investigations into the death but say foul play is not suspected.
The incident is believed to have happened near to the old Accident & Emergency area of the Mater Hospital campus.
A spokesman for the Mater Hospital issued a statement to the Herald today on the incident.
"An internal investigation is under way following the death of a patient at the hospital overnight," it said.
