CCTV footage of a homophobic attack on The George nightclub over the weekend show the perpetrator was dressed in a raccoon onesie at the time.

A man in his 20s was arrested yesterday morning in connection with the daubing of offensive slogans on the exterior of the club.

The popular gay nightclub was also vandalised with Nazi swastikas at 5.30am on Saturday.

Costume

Sources have revealed that high-quality CCTV footage of the incident shows that the attacker dressed in the racoon onesie.

"He was wearing a costume at the time. It was a one-piece outfit in the form of a raccoon," a source told the Herald.

The man who was arrested was still being questioned last night at Pearse Street Garda Station.

He was picked up near the city centre yesterday morning.

It was not clear if he was still dressed in the onesie when he was arrested.

The man is currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Under the act, the man can be detained for up to 24 hours for questioning.

The graffiti was successfully removed by the management of the pub.

Staff at The George have since thanked the public through its Facebook page after messages of support were sent following the incident.

"Thanks for all the support and messages today," the statement read.

"We are shocked and truly disheartened to see our building vandalised, especially with the anniversary of the equality vote this weekend.

"But at times like these our community has come together in support, like it always does."

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Disgust

Staff at The George expressed their shock and disgust at the graffiti, which seems to have been written in chalk and was easy to remove.

"It was distressing to see but thankfully we were able to clear it away with a few wipes," they said.

"We're not sure when it happened but it must have been early.

"Whoever it was must have been quick because no one spotted them."
