A young man who used threatening and abusive behaviour outside a Swords nightclub and then refused to give gardai his details had his case struck out after he made a donation to charity.

Aaron Carolan (24), of St Finbarr's Road, Cabra, admitted before Swords District Court to the offences, which took place last March 12 at Airside Retail Park, Swords.

He was due to make a charitable donation of €300 at the court but was on holiday in Mexico and un-able to attend.

His mother had appeared on his behalf.

Disrespect

Judge Dermot Dempsey refused to deal with the case until the defendant appeared before him and he adjourned the case to Balbriggan District Court.

Defence solicitor Fiona D'Arcy told Judge Dempsey at Balbriggan court that the defendant did not mean to disrespect the court by not turning up.

"He was in Mexico on a trip paid for by his mother," Ms D'Arcy said, adding that the defendant now had the €300 for charity.

"He apologises for any inconvenience caused."

Once the donation was handed over, Judge Dempsey struck out the case.
