GARDAI investigating the disappearance of 17-year-old Ciara Breen have arrested a suspect after they received a mystery letter with new information.

Ciara disappeared without a trace 18 years ago and was last seen at her home at Bachelors Walk, Dundalk in the early hours of February 13, 1997.

At the time of her disappearance she was wearing a black leather jacket, blue jeans, wine-

coloured sweatshirt and a white t-shirt with an image of her own face on it.

This morning, gardai arrested a man in his 50s in connection with the investigation.

The man is currently detained at Drogheda Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

A source told the Herald that a suspect was arrested after new information came to light.

“This arrest is on foot of a letter sent to an investigation team in Dundalk last year,” the source said.

“This provided fresh information which led to this arrest.”

When gardai made an appeal for information last year, two potential witnesses came forward and spoke to gardai, providing helpful information to the investigation team.

Ciara’s mother, Bernadette Breen, appeared on Crimecall to urge anyone who knew about her daughter’s whereabouts to come forward.

Bernadette believes that Ciara was murdered. It is understood she left the house by her bedroom window to meet up with somebody while her mother slept.

Detective Inspector Pat Marry is heading up the investigation team, and said earlier that they hoped the Crimecall programme would jog some memories.

“Ciara’s friends are all in their mid-30s now and many of them probably have children of their own,” he said.

“So we would hope that they may now know what Ciara’s mother must be going through and to help us give her some closure on her daughter’s disappearance.”

Ciara – who would be 35 years old now – is described as being of slim build, sallow complexion, long dark hair and blue eyes.

Anyone who may have information in relation to Ciara’s disappearance or who may have seen her on the night/morning of her disappearance to contact Dundalk Garda Station on 042-9388400 or the Garda Confidential Line 1-800-666-111.
