Man admits he killed dad-of-3

A 49-year-old man has admitted killing father-of-three Stephen O'Meara (26) in Co Wicklow in 2009.

Clement Byrne, of Clonattin Village, Gorey, Co Wexford, was arraigned before the Central Criminal Court yesterday, charged with murdering Mr O'Meara at Ballydonnell Wood, Redcross.

Byrne pleaded not guilty to murdering Mr O'Meara, who was from Rosehill in Wicklow Town, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

This plea was accepted by the State.

Mr Justice Paul Carney ordered a victim impact report and a probation report and remanded him in custody for sentencing on June 10.

Back-to-back holes in one

A golfer watched a friend get a hole in one, then bagged his own with the next shot.

Bob Wood (75) and Jeff Roberts (60) beat odds of a million to one to hit consecutive tee shots into the 157-yard, par three 17th at Queens Park Golf Club in Bournemouth, Dorset.

Jeff said: "In amateur golf, it's tradition to buy a round of drinks when you get a hole in one and there were 14 of us there, but luckily Bob and I shared the bill."

10 killed by tornado strike

A tornado ripped through 20 villages in eastern Bangladesh yesterday, killing 10 people and injuring around 500 others.

The 15-minute storm destroyed homes and shops and uprooted trees in Brahmanbaria district.

Officials reported that one child was among the dead.

The storm cut train service in the area. Villagers and emergency personnel took many of the injured to hospital.
