Man accused of serious nightclub attack

A YOUNG man accused of seriously assaulting another man has been sent forward for trial. Paul Dempsey (24), of Deansrath Grove in Finglas, is alleged to have attacked the man at Zinc nightclub in Leixlip, Co Kildare, on May 6 last.

He is facing trial in the Circuit Court where the penalties are potentially greater after the DPP ruled the matters were too serious for the District Court.

He appeared before Blanchardstown District Court charged with seriously assaulting another man, contrary to Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.

State solicitor Caroline Deasy said the book of evidence was ready and had been served on the accused who goes forward to the next sitting of Kildare Circuit Court.

The court was told that Dempsey is unemployed and on social welfare.

Judge David McHugh warned him he had 14 days to provide details to the State of anyone he proposed calling as a witness in his defence.

The judge also ordered that a video copy of a garda interview conducted with Dempsey be given to his legal team.
