Man absent in rape trial

THE trial of a man accused of raping his former partner with a carrot has continued to closing stages in his absence.

THE accused man (53) has pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to raping the 45-year-old victim with an implement and assaulting her causing her harm between November 17 and 18, 2011 in her Sligo home.

Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy told the jury they were not to draw any adverse inference from the absence of the accused.
