A WOMAN is to appear in a US court on a first-degree murder charge after shooting dead her Irish boyfriend.

Wendy Hank (33), of Christmas, Florida, has been accused of the premeditated killing of 39-year-old Darren William Haverty, who was originally from Greenhills in Dublin.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is providing consular assistance to Mr Haverty's family.

The Florida-based Osceola County police force said officers arrived at around 1am last Tuesday following a shooting at Harris Road in St Cloud.

Ms Hank told police she and her boyfriend were involved in a verbal and physical altercation, claiming Mr Haverty "battered her and approached her with a knife".

But detectives discovered evidence at the crime scene and during the autopsy that "conflicts with Hank's statements of self-defence", officers said.

Hank was arrested and booked into the Osceola County Jail.

Mr Haverty was shot and killed in Holopaw in Florida last Tuesday. It is believed he had lived in the US for a considerable length of time.

Deputies

After responding to the emergency call, police deputies who arrived on the scene spoke with Hank.

She claimed she shot her boyfriend after being beaten and threatened with a knife while camping in eastern Osceola County.

"She told deputies he battered her and approached her with a knife when she shot him.

"Deputies located a male deceased at the scene," the police report on the death stated.

In light of the autopsy findings, she was arrested and held without bail on a first-degree murder charge.
