Ulster Bank made a loss of £761m (€898m) last year, almost double the £368m recorded in 2009, according to figures from its parent bank Royal Bank of Scotland.

The 2010 figure included almost £1.2bn (€1.4bn) set aside for loan losses. This was up from £649m in 2009. Excluding loan losses, profits were up 50pc to £400m (€467m).
