Lego fights off its high-tech rivals to clinch the No.1 present in toy charts

It's a classic but still a favourite as Lego remains one of the must-have toys for Christmas.

The Toys Retailers Association, which represents 80pc of the sector in Ireland and the UK, has produced a list of the top toys for the festive season – and just one comes in at under €20.

Monopoly, the family favourite, also makes the list, but high-tech toys, from flying fairies to robotic dogs, feature strongly this year.

A global toy industry analyst has predicted there will be a slight increase in toy spend compared to last year.

Frederique Tutt said: "Much of this growth is going to be driven by a combination of innovation and technology in the sector. This is good news for the toy industry as 2013 has seen a soft performance so far, thanks in part to poor outdoor toy sales due to Spring's bad weather, and the absence of a summer movie blockbuster.

"This is counterbalanced by the fact that sales for special occasions are on the rise – up 4pc in the last 12 months – and a a result we are confident Christmas 2013 should end the year on a positive note," he said.

INNOVATION

Meanwhile, the Dublin Toy Fair at the RDS, which runs from November 27 to December 1, will give the public the chance to see what is on offer this Christmas.

Gary Grant, the chairman of the Dream Toys committee said: "Christmas 2013 is set to be a strong year for toys and the Dream Toys list reflects the need for toys to appeal to all budgets and tastes, but also how tech is continuing to increase its influence."

Popular toys for under €30, selected by the panel, include: Air Hogs RC Atmosphere, Barbie Mariposa; Bop It! Tetris; and Chasin Cheeky.
