Knitting fans in for a treat at the RDS

CRAFTY knitters and stitchers from all over Ireland will be at a major event in Dublin this weekend.

The annual Knitting and Stitching Show, Ireland's largest textile and craft even, will run until tomorrow at the RDS.

And it appears that home crafts are back in vogue – more than 25,000 visitors expected to attend the four days of the show, which is reporting a record for ticket sales and exhibitor numbers.

"The number of tickets sold in advance has soared five-fold on last year, and all our exhibition space was sold out," according to show spokesperson Helen Marriot.

CELEBRATION

"We are on track for the busiest and most successful show to date. This reflects the huge interest in knitting and hand crafts, a lot of it sparked by the recession," she added.

Ms Marriot said that young people in particular are picking up new craft hobbies.

"We also notice the interest in knitting and stitching amongst the young, and the desire for individualism, dress making and home interiors," she said.

"The show is a celebration of knitting, stitching and textiles in every conceivable form – knitters, embroiderers, cross-stitches, felt-makers, jewellery artists and quilters."

More than 400 companies selling specialist supplies feature at the show, along with 16 inspirational galleries. There will also be 200 workshops where people can learn about crochet, quilting, braid making and many other skills.
