Killer Douglas Ward high on hooch when he died
A CONVICTED killer who was found dead in his cell in Mountjoy Prison had drunk a large amount of hooch.
The body of Douglas Ward (38) was found at 6.40am on Friday.
It is understood that prison bosses have ruled out a drugs overdose and are now working on the theory that he may have died as a result of alcohol intoxication.
"This was not a drugs-related death and it was not suicide," said a source.
Ward, from Kockbridge, Co Louth, killed 18-year-old Niall Dorr in a prolonged and vicious assault in Castle Street, Dundalk, on October 13, 2010.
Father-of-three Ward punched and kicked Mr Dorr "like a rag doll", bouncing his head off a road several times in an unprovoked attack, his sentencing hearing heard in December 2012.
He was originally jailed for 13 years for manslaughter, but this was reduced to 10 years by the Court of Appeal in January.
At the time, Mr Door's heartbroken parents spoke of their anger that Ward's sentence had been cut.
Prison hooch can be produced from fruit, ketchup, sugar and even milk.
The sugars turn into alcohol, which is banned in jails. Bread can also be used as it provides the yeast for it to ferment.
Last November, prison officers in Mountjoy found 60 litres of the illicit booze brewing behind radiators during a security sweep.
