Judge to rule on doctor's role

THE High Court is being asked to rule on a claim that a consultant employed at a hospital on a temporary basis for periods totalling more than four years was entitled to a permanent contract.

Dr Ali Umar, who has since died, had twice applied unsuccessfully to be made permanent in positions at Cavan General Hospital and the Labour Court found he was entitled to a permanent contract. Mr Justice John Hedigan reserved judgment.



Cancer pill can 'halt blindness'

The cancer drug Avastin could help prevent blindness in premature babies born before their eyes developed completely, the same condition that affected singer Stevie Wonder, according to a US study.

About 50,000 people worldwide are blind because of this condition. The study, reported in The New England Journal of Medicine, showed that one injection of Avastin prevented blindness more effectively than laser surgery.



Seinfeld actor Uncle Leo dies

Actor Len Lesser, who starred on Seinfeld as Jerry's eccentric, shoplifting Uncle Leo, has died after a battle with cancer. He was 88.

Although the television and movie veteran appeared in just 15 episodes of Seinfeld, his idiosyncratic character was a key ingredient in the offbeat tone of the 1990s sitcom.
