Jail for drugs in soles of shoes

A Nigerian has been sentenced to seven years in prison at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court after being caught carrying almost €62,000 worth of cocaine in the soles of his shoes.

Joel Kanu (43), of Summer Street, Dublin 1, pleaded guilty to possession at Dublin Airport on December 14, 2009.

Judge Desmond Hogan sentenced him to seven years and suspended the final two on condition he leave Ireland within 48 hours of his release from prison.

Kanu was stopped by custom officers carrying a laptop bag and wearing a pair of "unusually large shoes".

The shoes were later X-rayed and found to contain 884 grammes of cocaine hidden in the soles.



Woman falls into shark jaws

A shark has mauled a woman who fell off a wakeboard towed by a speedboat off Australia.

The 24-year-old woman was attacked in Nelson Bay, north of Sydney.

She suffered head, neck and arm injuries.

The boat driver delivered her to a wharf where paramedics stabilised her condition before she was taken by helicopter to a hospital. Helicopter crewman Glen Rampling said the woman fell from her wakeboard before she was attacked.



Birthday hoax draws 200,000

Police say an Australian teenager hijacked a girl's Facebook page and posted an open invitation to her 16th birthday party that drew more than 200,000 positive replies.

The girl's shocked parents had the page removed from the social networking site.

Police have not identified the family or the party date in the hoax invitation as ways of discouraging would-be guests.

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with the stunt.



Five killed in missile attack

An American missile attack has killed five people close to the Afghan border today.

Pakistani officials, who did not wish to be identified, said the strike took place in the North Waziristan region.

The US routinely fires missiles from unmanned drones at al-Qa'ida and Taliban targets in northwest Pakistan.
