The childhood home and "focal point" of former Taoiseach Charlie Haughey's election campaigns is to be sold off after more than 80 years in the family.

Mr Haughey grew up in the home at 12 Belton Park Road in Donnycarney, having moved there from Mayo at a young age, but it is now on the market for just under €400,000.

Speaking to the Herald, the former Fianna Fail leader's son, TD Sean Haughey, said the sale was "definitely the end of an era".

He said the family put the house on the market following the death of the last living child of his grandmother.

Hub

Charlie's younger brother, Fr Eoghan Haughey (82) - an oblate priest - died in October 2016, the last of the seven siblings.

Dublin Bay North TD Sean said the house was a hub for the family ever since it first moved there in 1933.

"They moved from Derry to Castlebar and then to Sutton and Garretstown, before going to Donnycarney in 1933," he said.

"There were seven children, including my father and his brother, Padraig 'Jock' Haughey, who won an All-Ireland with Dublin alongside Kevin Heffernan in the 1950s.

"That was my grandmother's house and it's where she reared the seven children.

"My grandfather died at a young age - 48.

"It was the centre of everything," he added.

This was particularly the case during election time.

Former Fianna Fail leader Charles Haughey served three times as Taoiseach, between 1979 and 1992, and was an elected TD every year in north Dublin between 1957 and 1992.

"That would have been where we congregated during election time," Sean said, having been a TD between 1992 and 2011 himself, and regaining his seat last year.

"It was a very hospitable house. The cups of tea and the buns and cakes were famous [during the election crunch].

"There were plenty of celebrations there as well - it is definitely the end of an era," he added.
