'It's major operation after operation' - true Dub Dave critical after Brisbane fall
The family of a Dublin man who was critically injured in a fall at a construction site in Australia are "taking it one day at a time".
Dad-of-one David Conway fell 20 metres from scaffolding on the seventh storey of a construction site in Brisbane last Monday.
David (37) was resuscitated by workmates at the scene before critical care paramedics transported him to Gold Coast University Hospital.
"Dave is in a bad way but we are just so, so happy he is still with us," family friend Tadhg Ennis told the Herald.
"It's major operation after major operation at the moment, but his family are taking it day by day and piece by piece."
David, originally from Rathcoole, south Dublin, remains in a critical condition, but has since come out of a coma and is currently heavily sedated.
He is undergoing major operations on a daily basis, and there is a possibility his feet may have to be amputated.
"His mother Connie, father Shay and two brothers Richie and Stephen just dropped everything and headed straight out to Brisbane from Dublin," Tadhg said.
"They are an extremely close family and have a very close bond. They just got on whatever flights they could.
"Dave is a carpenter by trade, but he's known to be a jack of all trades. He can fix absolutely anything. He's lived in Australia for years and has his beloved Viv and a young daughter, Keisha.
"Australia is his home, his whole life is out there," Tadhg said.
"But his life will be very different from now on.
"We're all just rallying around now to help out as much as we can.
"Dave is one of the toughest. He is a true Dub."
Tadhg, who grew up in Saggart, has lived in New York for the last 10 years and is a close friend of the Conways.
He has set up a fundraiser page with one of David's brothers to help fund his medical treatment and recovery.
"Dave has a wife and a kid, he more than likely won't be working as a carpenter again soon," Tadhg added.
"We're trying to do what we can and hopefully the power of the media can help him too."
