Irwin gives Keano and O'Neill the thumbs-up

MAN United legend Dennis Irwin believes the new Ireland management team is "great for the country".

Irwin, in Dublin with former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel to teach inner city children soccer, congratulated fellow Cork native Roy Keane on his appointment as Martin O'Neill's right-hand man.

He said he believed the pair would work wonders. "It's been a whirlwind start, but the Latvia game went perfectly well," Irwin added.

"The Poland game was always going to be a bit tougher, but they battled hard. I think they would've learnt a lot more from that."

THRILLED

Rutland National School pupils were thrilled that the stars played with them and signed memorabilia.

Principal Darina Burke said students were over the moon. "They've been watching videos from matches Peter and Dennis played in," she added.

Pupil Niamh Fagan (11) said her brothers were green with envy and added: "We're all Man Utd fans, now I'm the only one with a signed ball."

And it wasn't just the children who loved it – Schmeichel had a great time too. "The idea that kids still remember you at all is mind-blowing," he said.
