Irishman's wife found dead with 40 stab wounds

An Irishman was being treated in hospital after his wife was stabbed "at least 40 times" at their home in Switzerland.

Harry Ringwood (48), originally from Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, was found unconscious beside the body of his wife.

He had a wound to his hand.

The body of Galina Shevchenko (46), originally from Kazakhstan, was found on Monday afternoon in the apartment they share in the town of Lutry in Lausanne.

Officers made the gruesome discovery on the first floor apartment shortly after 3pm after receiving a call from a workman.

The man was scheduled to carry out work at the address but became concerned when several attempts to ring the doorbell failed to warrant a response.

Eventually he decided to call the local police station, who arrived at the scene and immediately informed emergency services.

The inspector leading the investigation told the Herald today that the woman was stabbed "at least 40 times" and that there was blood "all over the apartment".

"It was quite a scene, the woman's body was found in a pool of blood, and there was blood all over the apartment as well. It was a very horrible death," he said.

The entire west side of the Main Street (inset) was sealed off to allow forensic officers to carry out examinations of the scene, and the woman's body was removed shortly after 7pm.

Mr Ringwood was taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

An exact circumstances surrounding the woman's death have not yet been formally identified in the preliminary stages of the investigation.

Police officers were this morning interviewing Mr Ringwood at his hospital bed.

Although the injuries he sustained were not-life threatening, investigating officers decided to wait he was "fully aware" to interview him.

It is believed Mr Ringwood is a PR executive at the cigarette company Phillip Morris International, where his wife was also employed.
