An Irishman has died following a drowning accident in the Maldives.

It is understood that he got into difficulty while swimming.

It is believed the man was holidaying on the Indian Ocean group of islands when tragedy struck.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that they are aware of the case and are providing consular assistance to the deceased man's family.

Officials at the Irish Embassy in New Delhi in India are liaising with the authorities in the Maldives following the death.

The Maldives is an archipelago of almost one thousand islands which lies southwest of India and Sri Lanka.

More than 100 of the islands are inhabited and it has a flourishing tourist industry.

The destination has been gaining in popularity with Irish holidaymakers.

A number of Irish-based tour operators organise holiday packages to the Indian Ocean islands.

The paradise island destination is known for its white beaches, water sports and tropical weather.
