An Irishman has died after a brutal attack in Mexico.

The man, named by Mexican authorities as George Michael Van Day, was found under a bridge in Ciudad Juarez on June 18.

Local reports say that the 26-year-old man was found by emergency services under the bridge which runs between the city and the United States.

The man was transferred to hospital where he remained in a coma until he passed away on Sunday morning.

Claudia Banuelos, a spokeswoman for the Attorney General, said that the cause of death was determined as head trauma due to a severe beating. An investigation is ongoing.

A representative for the Department of Foreign Affairs said they are aware of the death but have not yet been contacted for consular assistance.

There have been a total of 26 homicides in the Mexican city in the last month alone.
