AN Irish-born soldier serving in the British army who was shot in the head at a live-fire shooting range was unlawfully killed, an inquest jury in Cardiff found.
Cork-born Michael Maguire (21) was hit by a single machine gun bullet fired by a fellow soldier during a training exercise.
Mr Maguire was in a secure location just outside a training range in Pembrokeshire last May. The bullet was fired 1km away towards another group of recruits on a live-fire exercise.
'Cannibal Cop' found guilty
A New York City policeman dubbed the 'Cannibal Cop' was convicted of conspiracy in a case that opened a window on a shocking internet world of fetishists.
Lawyers for Gilberto Valle (28) said he was just spinning sick and twisted fantasies for his own pleasure when he chatted online about abducting, roasting and eating women.
Valle could get life in prison when he is sentenced on June 19, but is likely to face much less. His lawyers branded the outcome a 'thought prosecution', but prosecutors said the verdict proved Valle was genuinely bent on committing "grotesque crimes".
Cannes ready for US invasion
The Cannes Film Festival has an American flavour this year, with a Hollywood icon heading the jury and a quintessential US literary figure opening the event: The Great Gatsby.
A movie version of The Great Gatsby, with Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role, will open this year's festival.
Director Baz Luhrmann stressed the film's French connection, saying F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote "some of the most poignant and beautiful passages" of the book at a villa near Cannes.
Steven Spielberg is heading the jury at this year's festival, which runs from May 15-26.
