Intel eyes new markets

COMPUTER giant Intel, which has a major plant in Leixlip, revealed a deal to buy its way into the smartphone market.

Intel has reportedly been in negotiations with German chipmaker Infineon Technologies to purchase a wireless unit for $1.4bn (€1.1bn) for months.

Now that Intel has Infineon's Wireless Solutions (WLS) unit, the chip giant has the processors behind Apple's iPhone and entry-level Android devices and cuts its reliance on PCs.

The deal is the second major acquisition in two weeks by Intel.
