Innocent woman shot in back as gangsters shoot at wrong house

SHOCK: Bullet holes reveal how gunmen brought terror to quiet area

AN innocent woman has been shot at home by gangsters who targeted the wrong house.

The woman, named locally as Patricia Cunningham, was shot and injured in the back at her home in Bray, Co Wicklow yesterday evening.

She is recovering in hospital today.

Gardai believe that the woman, who has no involvement in crime, was shot when gunmen selected the wrong house for their attack.

The shooting happened at a home on Greenpark Road, which is a quiet residential area close to the People's Park in Bray.

The woman, who is in her late 40s, was wounded once in the lower back when a shot was fired through a window of the house.

It is thought the woman's injuries may have been caused from shots hitting a wall or glass. She was rushed by ambulance to St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin where her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

At least two shots were fired at the house at 7.45pm -- one of which injured the woman.

The scene was sealed off as officers from the Garda's Technical Bureau carried out a forensic examination.

Neighbours today said they knew nothing of the shooting until they saw the garda helicopter hovering overhead shortly afterwards.

"The woman who lives there lives alone with her three dogs. There is no reason why anyone would want to shoot her or her house," said one local.

The victim is said to have been living at the house for more than a decade.

Two bullet holes could be clearly seen in the front window of the small house this morning.

One penetrated the double-glazing glass panes, and a second entered the window frame above it.

Gardai also raided a house in nearby St Columcille's Terrace early today, but sources confirmed that this operation was not related to the shooting.

It is believed the attackers last night targeted the wrong address.

Last night's gun attack is the second time in three weeks that there has been a shooting incident in the area.

Gardai believe the incidents may be linked.

On January 16, gardai launched an investigation after shots were fired on Greenpark Road.

However, no one was injured in that incident. Two men wearing balaclavas were seen leaving the area. There was also a shooting in the Fassaroe area of the town last week.

In the latest attack, gardai have asked anyone who was in the Greenpark Road, Lower Dargle Road or People's Park areas of Bray to contact Bray Garda Station on (01) 666 5300.

Local councillor John Brady, who is based in the town, said there was "complete shock" in the "tight knit community".

Mr Brady called for people not to panic. He appealed for "calm over these shootings" and he encouraged anyone with information to come forward.
