In brief: Teen son shot dead in pub

A MOTHER has told how her son had celebrated his 19th birthday weeks before he was gunned down in a Dublin pub.

Rose Cogan was giving evidence at the opening of an inquest into the death of her son Darren, who was shot in the Black Horse Inn in Inchicore, Dublin, on June 25.

Mr Cogan, from Bluebell Avenue, and a 21-year-old friend had been sitting drinking when the gunman burst into the pub.

The 19-year-old died shortly afterwards. His friend was shot in the stomach but survived.

The inquest was adjourned for a further six months at the City Coroner's Court.



Boy accused of stabbing guard

A 16-year-old boy is to face trial for stabbing a security guard in the neck after he tried to stop a shoplifter.

The boy had been charged earlier at the Children's Court with assaulting the man and production of a knife, at a Centra shop, on Sundrive Road, in south Dublin.

However, it had been held that his case was too serious to be dealt with in the juvenile court and should go to the Circuit Court.

The teenager was told he would face trial at the next term of the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.



Elvis fan dies at tribute event

THE partner of an Elvis fan found dead in the US has paid an emotional tribute to his "princess".

Grazyna Lawrie, known as Gerrie, from Aberdeen, was found dead in a flat in Memphis, Tennessee.

Police have said they believe the 41-year-old committed suicide.

The oil worker, from Aberdeen, had been in Memphis for an annual festival marking Elvis Presley's death. The singer died 34 years ago this month



Spinal Tap star to play Nixon

This Is Spinal Tap star Harry Shearer is to play disgraced US President Richard Nixon in a new show based on secret White House tapes.

Nixon's The One, which will be shown on Sky Arts later this year, is drawn from more than 2,000 hours of tapes secretly recorded by Nixon while he was in power.
