In brief: OAP charged over child porn

A PENSIONER has been charged with a number of child pornography offences.

Thomas Pollock (68) of Castleplunkett, Castlerea, Co Roscommon, appeared at Castlerea District Court.

He is charged with having child pornography images on his personal computer at Castleplunkett, Castlerea, in April, 2008 and at Strokestown in July, 2008.

He is further charged with distributing child pornography images or having the images for the purpose of distribution, publication, exportation, sale or show on various dates at the two locations between 2007 and 2009.



Boy accused of garda assault

A GARDA suffered a broken wrist after a 15-year-old boy dragged him to the ground and repeatedly kicked him, a court heard.

The boy, now aged 16, was charged at the Children's Court with assault causing harm to Garda Stephen Boyce, in north Dublin, on March 9 last year.

Garda Garvan Lennon said it was alleged that the officer had been trying to arrest another person when the teenager and an accomplice intervened.



Walliams to swim Thames

COMIC David Walliams is to swim around 200 miles along the River Thames.

The funnyman has previously swum across the English Channel and cycled the length of Britain for charity challenges.

His next test will see him follow the course of the river from its source.

Walliams's challenge is to be staged for Sport Relief and will begin in September.



Air force planes have near miss

US safety chiefs are investigating a near-collision of an American Airlines jet and two military transport planes, in the latest of a string of close calls in US airspace during the past year.

American Airlines flight 951 was on its way to Sao Paulo, Brazil, at about 10.30pm on January 20 when a warning system alerted pilots to an impending collision with the two US Air Force C-17s about 80 miles south east of New York City, the National Transportation Safety Board said.
