In Brief: Garda plea on missing girl

A 16-year-old girl last seen in Inchicore in Dublin has been reported as missing.

The teenager from Newbridge, Co Kildare, was last seen in the city district on June 14.

Shannon Jackson is described by gardai as being 5' 4'' with a slim build. She has dark hair cut short and blue eyes.

She was wearing black shorts, white boots, a multi-coloured top and a short black jacket.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Newbridge Garda Station on 045 431212.



Driver flees as crash kills 14

At least 14 people were killed when a speeding bus crashed into a tree in northern India, a police spokesman said.

Surendra Srivastava said at least 24 other passengers were injured in the pre-dawn crash near Amroha town in Uttar Pradesh state today.

About 60 people were on the bus. Most were returning from a religious ceremony in the Hindu holy town of Haridwar. Police are searching for the driver, who fled the scene.



Young man dies in flat fire

A YOUNG man died after an early morning fire at a Cork city centre flats complex.

The man was is in his 20s and was pronounced dead after being dragged from his smoke-filled flat in a building on Charlemont Terrace, off Wellington Road.

The fire was detected at 4am and five units of Cork fire brigade and three Health Service Executive ambulances attended the scene.

Despite desperate efforts to revive the young man, he was pronounced dead before he could be rushed to hospital.

The blaze did not spread to adjacent buildings.
