In Brief: Dart damage case struck out

A DUBLIN youth, who denied causing €1,500 worth of damages during an arson on a Dart train, had his case thrown out yesterday as CCTV evidence was not playable.

The 17-year-old had been charged at the Children's Court with causing damage by fire to a Dart train carriage at Kilbarrack station, on September 7 last. He had pleaded not guilty to the charge and was to go on trial at the juvenile court yesterday.

Judge Ann Ryan was told that due to a software problem with the CCTV evidence the footage could not be played. She struck out the case.

Vatican regrets bank boss letter

THE Vatican said it "truly regrets" the publication of a letter from a psychotherapist detailing the mental health of the Vatican's ousted bank chief, as yet another Holy See document leak exposes the unseemly side of the Catholic Church's governance.

The letter was published in an Italian newspaper and appeared aimed at further discrediting and humiliating the Vatican bank's ex-president, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, once a top papal adviser.

Terror suspect's 'rights violated'

AN Iraqi man facing terrorism charges in Kentucky has been held in solitary confinement for more than a year with no contact with other inmates or television, radio or outdoor recreation during the daytime, his lawyer Jim Earhart said.

The conditions under which Mohanad Shareef Hammadi (24) have been held violate his constitutional rights, Mr Earhart said. "It's horrendous," He's doing about as well as could be expected if you put someone in a room by himself for a year."

Fear over sex attacks in Cairo

AMNESTY International called on Egyptian authorities to investigate reports of sexual assaults on women protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square, to counter the impression that no one will be punished.

There has been a rise in violent attacks against women since demonstrators returned to the square 10 days ago to protest verdicts against toppled President Hosni Mubarak, his sons and security aides.
