IN BRIEF: Ash cloud fears over volcano

The warning level for a remote Alaska volcano has been raised after a new lava dome began forming, indicating the mountain could explode and send up an ash cloud that could threaten aircraft.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory elevated the alert status for Cleveland Volcano. Officials say the new lava dome was spotted in the summit crater. The observatory says as of Monday, the dome was about 130ft in diameter.



US diplomat's N Korea hope

A senior US diplomat is expressing "hope in diplomacy" for settling differences with North Korea, even as he reassures ally Seoul that a lasting US-South Korea military presence will back up any talks.

Assistant secretary of state Kurt Campbell, said: "I share with South Korean friends that there is hope in diplomacy, but I must be very clear that that hope of diplomacy rests on the reality of a very strong deterrence and military commitment, and that will be unwavering."



Divorce for Betancourt

A JUDGE in Colombia has dissolved the marriage of Ingrid Betancourt, the former presidential candidate rescued in 2008 from leftist rebels who held her hostage for more than six years in the jungle.

Ms Betancourt filed for divorce after her rescue. Her now ex-husband, Juan Carlos Lecompte, originally refused to agree to the split with the woman he married in 1997.

The 53-year-old Mr Lecompte demanded a share of royalties from Betancourt's book: Even Silence Has An End.



Army general on murder trial

A Mexican army general and 29 soldiers under his command in a town on the border with Texas are being tried for crimes including torture, murder and drug trafficking.

According to reports, shortly after General Manuel Moreno Avina arrived in Ojinaga in 2008, his troops began kidnapping, torturing and killing suspects and stealing during raids on suspects' homes.
