In brief: 30 new jobs at Eddie Rocket's

THIRTY new jobs are being created with the opening of an Eddie Rocket's outlet in Kildare.

The new branch in Naas brings the number of Eddie Rocket's restaurants in Ireland to 41, employing more than 1,000 people. The company has created 70 new jobs this year.

Niall Fortune, chairman of Rocket restaurants, said: "At a time when every new job counts, we are delighted to be playing our part."

A new Eddie Rocket's opened in Carlow town earlier this year creating 30 jobs. And the branch in the Stillorgan Shopping Centre in Dublin has re-opened after a revamp.



Poison vinegar kills 11 villagers

Vinegar tainted with antifreeze is suspected of killing 11 people and causing sickness in another 120 after a communal Ramadan meal in Xinjiang, China.

Victims consumed vinegar that was put in two plastic barrels that had previously been used to store toxic antifreeze, it is thought.

The villagers were ethnic Muslims who were sharing an evening meal after the daily fast observed during the holy month of Ramadan.

Children as young as six were among the dead.



Nuke victims can't go home

The Japanese government may declare areas near the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant uninhabitable for more than 10 years because of radiation levels that are more than 500 times safety limits.

Radiation readings that would be as high as 508.1 millisieverts per year were detected in Okuma town, 3km from the plant, compared with the internationally recommended limit of one millisievert a year.



Two shot after 'friendly' game

TWO men were shot in separate incidents outside an American football stadium in San Francisco after a pre-season game.

One victim was in serious condition last night after being shot several times in the stomach and another was recovering from less serious wounds following the attacks in a car park outside San Francisco's Candlestick Park, police said.

Violence flared after the 'friendly' match between San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders.
