Mrs Brown's Boys star Brendan O'Carroll is "feeling tip-top and relieved" after a heart attack scare.

The 62-year-old was filming the Christmas special of the hit show in Glasgow when he felt unwell in the middle of the night.

O'Carroll, who plays Agnes Brown, thought he was dying and asked his wife, Jenny Gibney (53), to call an ambulance.

Speaking on The Late Late Show, the Finglas native, who was rushed to hospital, said: "I thought I was having a heart attack."

He said he had to wake up his wife, who plays his daughter, Cathy Brown, in the BBC sitcom, at "about 2am" because he felt unwell and that it was "really, really painful".

"I said to her, 'You should call an ambulance'," he said.

"We called the ambulance and wanted to meet them on the street.

"When Jenny and I were in the lift we were still on 999.

"They told Jenny to put her hand on my tonsil, to count my heartbeat."

O'Carroll said he "had the fright of my life" and thought he was a "goner".

"When I got in the ambulance they said, 'Well, it is not your heart'."

Tests revealed he had a violet stomach bug, which he "vomited out for 12 hours".

Mum

"I couldn't have eaten in six months what I threw up," he said.

A spokeswoman for O'Carroll said he was now "feeling tip-top and relieved"

Brendan also revealed on The Late Late that his co-star of 22 years, Rory Cowan, has left the show to look after his mum.

"Rory has left because he found touring gruelling," said O'Carroll.

"All my family go on the road with me. For me, it is a six-month holiday with my grandkids, but Rory's mam has not been well for a long time.

"He worried about that. I was sorry to see him go, but I was glad to see him happy.

"We now have a new Rory in the show. It is like he went for plastic surgery.

"We were going to get him to come out of the shower like Bobby Ewing or out of a phone box like Doctor Who," joked O'Carroll.
