I'm surprised my records still stand - Sonia
SHE is hailed as Ireland's greatest-ever athlete, but Sonia O'Sullivan thinks it's time for someone to break her records.
The sporting heroine's list of achievements is impressive - she is a four-time Irish Olympian and nabbed a trio of World Championship titles.
"A lot of my records are so old now, you would think someone would have broken a few of them by now," she told the Herald. "This year a lot of my records were 20 years old."
Sonia can't be a one-off, she explained, especially in light of the progress made in the field of athletics since her heyday.
"If I can do it then someone else must be able to," she said.
"There has been so much advancement and so much more information available for runners now."
Two decades ago, the Cork-born athlete broke the world record for a run over 2,000m.
She completed the race in 5:25:36 in Edinburgh, and it still stands.
Looking back over her impressive career leaves the mother of two feeling rather old sometimes, she said.
"All of the things I've done aren't always on my mind, but it does make you feel old," she said.
"When you look back at a time when you were running races every single week, you have to move on from it."
The 45-year-old splits her time between her Melbourne home and Ireland, with trips to London squeezed in between.
