I'm not recruiting members for new party, says Lucinda

FORMER FINE GAEL junior minister Lucinda Creighton has shot down speculation that she is actively recruiting members for a new political party.

Reports over the weekend suggested that the Reform Alliance TD was attempting to round up a number of individuals to build up a party ahead of a challenge in the 2016 General Election.

But Creighton dismissed the suggestion and said that the Irish public are in no mood for a new political party at this time.

And while Ms Creighton said that she doesn't wish to be a "sole trader" and wanted to try and offer "a new vision" to the Irish electorate, she insisted on RTÉ's The Week in Politics that she is not "teasing" the public with reports of a new political establishment.

"I am very much inclined to try and find a way to work with others and to put something before the Irish people that they can see as being different from the existing political parties, that they can see as offering them a new vision for the country," Lucinda said.

VISION

"That takes time. I'm not teasing anybody. It's simply trying to find the best way to offer people change at the next election."

The rebel TD was expelled from Fine Gael after she voted against the controversial abortion bill.

Ms Creighton (34) said that it was a tough decision to vote against the party that she has been with since she was 18, but she felt it was the right decision at the time.

"It's a very sad night for me. This is a party I've been with since I was 18 and now I've been expelled," she said at the time.

"It's something I couldn't vote for. I didn't break a pledge I made before the election but unfortunately the party has broken their pledge."

Shortly after the breakaway, Lucinda formed an allegiance with a number of other ex-Fine Gael members and Independents to become The Reform Alliance.

However, members have consistently refuted suggestions that the grouping of likeminded people was a new political party.
