I'm living the dream, says X Factor star Shayne Ward as he lands Corrie role
X Factor winner Shayne Ward looks set to swap concerts for the cobbles as it has been announced that he will join the cast of Coronation Street.
The singer (30), whose parents are Irish, has been confirmed as the newest member of cast in the iconic soap, which is set in his hometown of Manchester.
The performer, who first shot to fame when he won the X Factor back in 2005, has signed a one-year contract with the show and will make his small screen debut this August.
The crooner-turned-actor will play the role of Aidan Connor - a distant cousin of Corrie favourite Michelle, a character played by fellow talent show winner Kym Marsh, who won a place in ill-fated pop group Hear'Say after competing in Popstars.
Aidan also has ties with Underworld boss Carla and arrives in Weatherfield when he hears she's having issues with her business.
According to ITV, the new character will quickly get stuck into drama on the famous cobbled street, proving popular with the female characters.
"Good looking and charming, Aidan's arrival will set female hearts fluttering - but he's no pushover and quickly makes an enemy of Tracy Barlow's ex hubbie Robert Preston," the station said.
Shayne revealed last month that he auditioned for a part on the show, but his role was only confirmed by Corrie bosses yesterday.
Speaking about the announcement, the That's My Goal singer revealed that landing a role in the hit show has been an "absolute dream come true".
"On hearing the news I had been offered the part on the show, I was in total disbelief. It still hasn't sunk in," he said.
"Shayne Ward the lad from Manchester, given such a role on such an iconic show - it is an absolute dream come true. I'm excited to walk down those famous cobbles.
"My family and friends know just how much this means to me and I cannot wait to do them all proud."
ITV also revealed that Shayne's on-screen family won't be far behind him, as they plan to introduce more new characters in the next few months.
