'I worked as a waitress for 10 years', says new Restaurant cooking celeb Dr Ciara
It will be a trip down memory lane for Dr Ciara Kelly as she appears in tonight's episode of The Restaurant - she put herself through college working as a waitress.
The Operation Transformation star is the latest celebrity to step into the kitchen at Marco Pierre White's restaurant in Donnybrook.
She will be hoping to impress the acid-tongued critics as she tries to gain a five-star rating from the panel.
Dr Kelly revealed she was a dab hand while working in eateries as she spent 10 years grafting as a waitress while studying medicine. She used to work in the legendary Chicago Pizza Pie factory on Dublin's St Stephen's Green, which is now TGI Fridays.
"I worked as a waitress while I was studying to be a doctor. It paid my way through college," she said.
"I used to come in from college and go straight back out to the restaurant."
She added: "It was relatively well paid, very sociable and I used to have quite a lot of craic doing it. I like being busy and that job really suited me."
And although she practises a healthy lifestyle on the RTE weight-loss show, she said she's happy to let things slide on a night out - and did not offer up an healthy menu.
"Not at all. People thought it would be all healthy salads but no, I went for none of that. I used lots of cream and nice things," she said.
"If you're going out on a nice night out I believe you should be able to order whatever you want. Everything in moderation."
She opted for monkfish and chicken dishes for the mains and said she went for what she would normally like to eat when she was dining out.
However, the Newstalk presenter will be up against a tough crowd tonight.
Pierre White remarked at one point how it was "like watching the Titanic sink" for one particular course and said that he was "not enjoying it".
"Marco is terrifying, he's so intense. It's horrific when they come in and they all start discussing your food so dispassionately," Dr Ciara said.
