Hunt for budding Tall Ships sailors for voyage of a lifetime

ORGANISERS of this summer's Tall Ships Race are hoping to recruit hundreds of budding sailors to take part in "the voyage of a lifetime".

People of all ages are being encouraged to apply for a place on one of 29 ships that have already registered to take part.

The festival will take place from August 23-26 and is expected to attract up to a million visitors to the capital. It is the first time the Tall Ships Races will visit Dublin since 1998.

Organisers are keen to recruit a large number of trainees to become part of the sailing experience. Michael Byrne, of the Dublin Tall Ships Events Limited, told the Herald that being a trainee on one of the ships was a "life-changing experience".

"We had 140 trainees last year so we are hoping to match that figure or even beat it. I can't emphasise enough how much of an amazing experience trainees have," he said.

The festival is expected to bring a €50m windfall for businesses in the capital and will also boost the city's global image.
