Hozier has got his first US number one album - topping the Billboard charts with Wasteland, Baby! on its first entry.

The Wicklow singer-songwriter had 75,000 album sales in the States by last Thursday.

It pipped Ariana Grande's Thank You, Next and Lady Gaga's A Star Is Born to the top spot in the Billboard 200 this week and becomes the first rock album to take the crown in 2019. The Billboard 200 ranks the most popular albums in the US on a weekly basis.

The album had already hit number one in Ireland last week, with the rock star reacting to the news saying he was "over the moon".

Speaking to officialcharts.com, he thanked his fans for backing him.

"I'm absolutely over the moon and can't wait to get home and play this music to you, so thank you so much and I will see you soon," he said.

Hozier kicked off his US tour in Buffalo, New York last night and will conclude on April 14 in Spokane, Washington.

It's a major coup for the singer, who admitted recently that his meteoric rise to fame had come as a surprise.

"I thought I'd be an independent and alternative artist for a while - and stay in that field for a long time," the hugely successful singer said.
