Horror: Teen girl is blasted to death in car in bitter feud

The black jeep which had false number plates sped away from the scene and was later found in the Citywest area -- close to Brown's Barn by detectives.

Melanie was driven to Tallaght Hospital but despite frantic attempts by the emergency services, she was pronounced dead shortly after 1.15am today.

Gardai believe the shocking murder is linked to a bitter feud among Travellers and drug dealers which has been simmering in the Tallaght area for a number of months.

"This could be linked to a Tallaght murder that happened a few years ago," said a source.

It is understood that a hoax pipe bomb attack at Russell Close, Jobstown, last week is linked to last night's terrible murder.

Sources say that Melanie was linked to a man involved in this feud.

This man was the target of last night's gun attack. He also survived a previous assassination attempt last September.

On that occasion, the victim was looking out of his front window to see who was ringing his doorbell when he received two blasts of buckshot from a sawn-off shotgun, which was fired through the window glass.

The victim was peppered with pellets in the forehead but was not seriously injured.

The shooting happened at the front of a house at Drumcairn Avenue in the Fettercairn estate in Tallaght.

The feud has links to gangland warfare in Limerick and the notorious McCarthy/Dundon gang in the city.

"This is a very bitter situation -- major reprisals are expected. This has been going on since 2009 -- it is much more complicated than a regular Traveller feud," said a source.

Melanie is originally from the Newcastle West are of Co Limerick but has been living at various addresses in the Tallaght area for the last number of years.

This morning, her body was removed to the mortuary at Tallaght Hospital for a post mortem examination and the State Pathologist has been notified.

An incident room has been set up at Tallaght Garda Station and investigating Gardai are appealing for witnesses.

The scene at Brookview Way was preserved this morning pending a full technical and forensic examination.
