Horror as dad crushed to death by falling wall

A GRANDFATHER has been crushed to death in a freak accident after a wall in his garden collapsed on top of him.

Billy O'Driscoll (72) died instantly in the horrific incident at his family home in Bandon, Co Cork.

It is understood that part of the wall that runs at the back of his house fell into the garden at about 5pm, with Mr O'Driscoll being caught under the rubble.

The retired carpenter's family desperately tried to get the collapsed wall off him, assisted by neighbours.

He was married with six grown-up children - five sons and a daughter, who told the Herald that her dad was very well known and respected in the area.

Cork County Mayor and Bandon councillor Alan Coleman offered his condolences at the tragedy.

"I know the O'Driscoll family and it was always nice to see Billy around the place. He was a quiet man but a very pleasant guy around town.

"As Mayor of the County and representative of the area I think it's a tragic loss really and very untimely. It was a freak accident, and we feel for his widow and his family at this difficult time for them.

"I know the people in the town are really shocked and they are rallying around the family," he said.

The wall that runs at the back of the houses is described as being around 30ft tall on the garden side. The emergency services attended the scene and Mr O'Driscoll's remains were taken to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

An investigation is being carried out by the gardai and the Health and Safety Authority to try to establish what caused part of the wall to collapse.
