Hoops fans in dreamland as 3,200 travel to glamour clash with Spurs

They may not have won but Shamrock Rovers certainly rattled Harry Redknapp's multi-millionaire players at White Hart Lane last night.

Cheered on by more than 3,200 Irish fans who made the trip to support them, the Irish team were magnificent in defeat.

Spurs boss Redknapp paid tribute to them, saying: "Credit to Shamrock Rovers. When they scored we were in trouble."

The excitement of the Irish fans reached fever pitch as the Premier League giants trailed to the League of Ireland champions for 10 minutes of the second half.

Stephen Rice had earned a place in Rovers folklore by giving them a shock lead with a close-range expert flick past Carlo Cudicini.

The Irish contingent, assembled at the Park Lane end, went through an array of chants mocking Spurs and calling them a "small club in London".

The dream may have died with Spurs retaliation of three goals in the space of five minutes, but the fans were determined to enjoy their night whatever happened.

They sang their hearts out regardless and at the end gave their players a rapturous ovation.

As the Spurs fans headed for the exits, the Hoops fans remained in full voice applauding the heroic efforts of their team.
