Hero McAteer lands TV role ... for Al-Jazeera

A HERO of 1990s Irish football -- Jason McAteer, inset -- has landed a TV role with Al-Jazeera.

The soccer star has been mingling with Irish fans in Gdansk as they settle to their campsites and hotels ahead of the next Euro 2012 clash.

The striker made his name during Ireland's 1994 World Cup campaign.

And Jason (40) has revealed he has taken up a presenting job with a television show for some of the key games.

"I'm working for Al-Jazeera, but just for 12 days because they don't think that Ireland are going to make the semi-finals -- I said, 'Watch this space'."

The former Liverpool player has taken up a number of presenting roles with UK sports shows and some Irish radio channels, but this is a first on the international scene.

The star was in the Polish city to get the reaction from the Irish supporters who had followed the boys in green to their game against Spain.

Jason said he believes Trap's men have the ability to take on the Spaniards.

"That's the one thing you can't do. You can't write off an Ireland team. We always produce a shock result."

The Liverpudlian said that the players are not downbeat.

"They're disappointed, but they have a massive game against Spain, they've got to pick themselves up.

"The preparation is under way. They know what they've got to do.

"They've got to put that Croatia result behind them."
