Henry Street - 'escape route' from the GPO
Henry Street lies in ruins in the picture above, taken in the days after the Rising ended.
Workmen, guarded by British troops, are seen clearing the rubble.
In the background, Nelson's Column - the site of the present-day Spire - remains mostly untouched.
The east end of Henry Street witnessed heavy fire on Thursday and Friday of Easter week, both from artillery shells aimed at the GPO and small arms' fire.
Volunteer Eamonn Bulfin recalled: "One shell hit a house we had evacuated...and flattened it absolutely. It went down like a house of cards."
Machine gun fire intensified on Friday evening as the rebels exited a sidedoor of the GPO to escape the burning building.
They ran across the street into Henry Place and on through that street to Moore Street.
